Strangers in our home.

This past weekend, we decided to vacate our home and let two random strangers stay, instead. You see, ever since our travels, we became big fans of AirBnb's services, which allowed us to rent people's homes and save a ton of money instead of having to book a hotel everywhere we went. So for the last couple of months we had been contemplating if we should rent our own place out and make a couple extra bucks on the side.

The Dizzle's Mom was out of town this past weekend and offered to let us stay if we wanted to rent out our place. So rent we did. I was wondering if I'd have some dramatic story to tell you, but truthfully, it went great, and we definitely look forward to doing it again.

The couple came on Friday afternoon, and after quick introductions and telling them to help themselves to anything they wanted in the kitchen, we handed over the keys and said goodbye! The Dizzle even got a bottle of wine with cheese and crackers as a little welcome (we had that happen to us in Spain, and thought it was a nice touch).

When we got back on Sunday, the wine was gone....but they didn't even touch the other food. I mean, shoot, when The Dizz and I were staying at other people's houses and they gave us free reign on their fridge, you better believe we raided that thing immediately.

Oh well, more for us.

Here's where the couch is SUPPOSED to go. I was hoping to have it delivered before they got there, but nope, nothing yet. So yeah....they walked into an almost bare room with just a bed. How cozy?

After they left, I made sure to do a little look-see. Make sure nothing was awry, you know? And awry it was not. They had even taken the sheets off the bed (after doing who knows what on it), washed their dishes, and took out their trash. The place was in great condition.

So there ya have it. Two nights later and $400 richer. Easy trade-off, in my opinion.

I never would have thought I'd be comfortable doing something like this. Perhaps it's that I haven't quite become super attached to our new home yet. It still feels like a place we've just been staying at for a month. Plus, we really don't have any valuables. We took our computers with us, and everything else I could have parted with if they truly decided to be THIEVES and steal from us. It would have been shitty, but I'd live. Fortunately, they were honest people and great guests.

We figure if we can do just one weekend a month (3 nights/$520) then it'd be a great way to save quicker for some hopefully soon-to-be traveling.

In fact, this weekend I'll be heading to San Diego - - so we've decided to rent it out again! I've been getting basically an inquiry every day, sometimes more. It's gotten to the point that I have to turn down about 75% of the people because well, we still need our home to actually LIVE in. But it's been pretty neat and I'm glad we decided to give it a try. :)

The end and good day.

xoxo

  1. I've always considered doing this at our place in Portland, but we've lived here now for a while and I worry about theft and stains and such from letting people stay... but good to hear your great experience!

  2. I have never heard of this and love it! I spend two weekends at my boyfriends and could totally do this!!!

  3. My boyfriend and I have been thinking about doing this as well! It's good to hear a positive experience! With cost of living so high in SF, the extra income would be great!

  4. This is cool! If I lived somewhere interesting I would totally do that but I am pretty sure no one has a desire to visit Whiteford (aka middle of nowhere). Glad you had a great experience!

  5. Wow I've never heard from the perspective of someone who actually lives in the place they've listed on airbnb. Very cool! We can't do it at the house we're in now, but maybe we'll try it out at our next house when we change bases.

  6. i am so keeping you in mind next time i want to head up that way! i would probably be the person that would add food to your fridge instead of eat it all.

  7. I'd be concerned about all of my personal items like pictures, musical instruments, computers, paperwork, etc. Do you take these items with you when you leave?

  8. I think it's so cool that you decided to test out Air BnB - I've thought about it before, but haven't had the balls to go through with it as of yet. Another one of my friends also recently used Air BnB with their apartment and had a great experience. Maybe it's time to finally give it a go. Can't beat the extra cash ;)

  11. That is definitely good money! I could never get money like that here, so it's not worth it for me. But $400 for two nights? I'd sign up for that in a heartbeat haha

  12. Great concept and an alternative to another income! Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable doing that (but then again I didn't have the experience of renting someone's house yet) but my house has an extra room and since my family is small, my mum decided to rent out the room to a stranger (usually students, new comers/single woman) - super strange sharing the house with a stranger but it was nice to have pocket money from a spare room. Thank goodness to honest people too :P

  14. How cool! I would love to do that. Only problem is we live in a mother in law apartment and don't think the home owners would love strangers coming in and out haha! Glad you had such a great experience!

  16. I hear good things about AirBNB and am definitely thinking about trying it next time we go to Europe. So cool that you are able to make some extra cash on it. I'm such a control freak with a touch of OCD. I'd freak out having people I don't know stay in my place. Or even staying in places where people I don't know have stayed-ie hotels!! I'm ridiculously finicky about stuff like that. So glad that you had a really nice couple and a nice experience for your first time around.

  17. So amazing! I feel like I'd have a hard time letting people stay in my home without me there but I'd rethink it with that kind of payout!

  23. I'm glad you had such a positive experience! I just wanted to mention that you should double check your lease - many have clauses forbidding this sort of thing. If not, enjoy!

  24. Fascinating idea! I'm glad it went well for you--sounds like they really appreciated having such generous hosts!

  25. I love Air BnB! We rented all of our apartments for our trip to Australia via that site. And I'm not going to lie-- I started wondering about renting out our house while we were gone. I got a little freaked out about it mostly because I worry that people will forget to lock or do something silly that wouldn't be smart for Baltimore. Also, we have a cat so I don't know how that would go over...

  26. Thats so awesome and such an easy way to make money and travel at the same time!!

  27. That's really awesome! That's a GREAT way to make extra cash/ pay the rent, especially for people who travel a lot for business or something.
