Just call me the office fatty.

So I know I've only been working for 2 days now, but I'd like to think I'm a quick learner when it comes to people observing. And so far, I've observed this: Everyone in the office is fit, thin, and health-conscious. And here I thought I was pretty health conscious, but compared to these ladies? Um, no. Fatty.

Example #1: This morning, there was a "birthday brunch" in the office for a few of the girls. Now, back in my day, when I was a fellow office worker in San Diego, whenever there was a birthday, some sort of celebration, or heck, just because it was Friday, there was always a table filled with cakes, cookies, donuts, and any other fatty foods that were justified because it was a "special occasion." But here at Williams-Sonoma?

The table had:
A) a bowl of fruit
B) a bowl of granola, and
C) a bowl of low-fat yogurt.

Yes, that's right. It was a "Build-your-own-parfait" kind of celebration.

Except, oh wait, what's that down there at the end of the table?? A teeny tiny plate with about four muffins and one sprinkled donut!

I kept waiting for someone to dive in and start the "real" celebration.

But no one took the bait. No one!

As everyone was divulging in their healthy parfaits, I felt like the creeper who couldn't stop staring at the muffin/donut plate! I was baffled that these girls had such will power!

So obviously, if none of them were going to grab one, then I certainly wasn't going to be the fatty new girl who stuffed her face in front of these yoga-goin-parfait-eatin-skinny girls!

Example #2: Today, a couple of the girls oh-so-graciously invited me to walk down to the deli with them for lunch. And if you know what it's like to be the "new girl," then it's a pretty big deal when you get such an invite and it's crucial you accept so as to get an "in" with them! Anyway, we got to the deli and I was quite proud of myself for ordering a turkey/avocado sandwich on wheat, with BAKED Ruffles and a DIET Coke.

That is until the girls ordered next.

One ordered a small sandwich, NO chips, and a healthy juice. Another ordered a small sandwich, NO chips, and a fruit cup. And lastly, the 3rd girl in my department had soup. SOUP. That's it. SOUP!!

We got back to the office to eat lunch at our desks and I attempted to eat just HALF of my sandwich and HALF of my chips so as to have some sort of moderation around these thin and toned ladies.

...That is until 3pm rolled around and I about passed out from hunger, so of course, I had to scarf down the rest of my meal.

Example #3: On top of my hearty breakfast and large coffee, I ALSO brought snacks with me to work. I'm one of those people that if I don't eat every 3 hours, I tend to get shaky, cranky, and ravenous. So I brought a Luna Bar and a 100 cal pack in preparation for my long work day.

Both were gone by 3pm.

Do you think any of the other girls had snacks throughout the day? Of course not.

So yeah, I'm going to just embrace my roll as the office fatty! I'm going to continue with MY version of healthy eating and moderation!

And if you don't like it, well then...

xoxo

  3. I would have had no shame and taken the donut forsure. I can't help myself around sweets. Although I probably would have taken it when no one was looking so they wouldn't know. :P

  4. Ha. That would get awkward after awhile..it would be like a forced diet lol And also I'd love to be a 'fatty' like you if thats what it looks like lol :P

  6. Hahaha, put it this way, it is rare to find me at work without munching on something. The only time I'm not eating is when I'm with customers... but other than that, fruits, junk foods, drinks, etc. I'll always have something on me.

  7. I think you're perfectly fine. I need to eat like every 2 hours or I start starving. I'm constantly snacking. You eat way healthier than me to begin with. And I would have taken that donut in front of them AND happily munched on it while making 'mmm' noises. Haha!

  8. I remember at my old job my boss always had a lot of little snacks for us. I rarely ate them, because I was usually too tired to eat. Haha.

  11. hahaha I literally started my new job yesterday too AND got invited to Subway (obviously accepted), ordered a turkey/avocado sandwich on wheat and a coke zero. Coincidence? or FATE!? I totes would've gotten a footlong if the chick ahead of me hadn't ordered a 6in. At least she got chips too? California is a strange place! ;)

  15. A good follow up for this article might be to answer this question. So do they (the other girls) have good moods along with their healthy and little portions?

  16. Haha this is killing me. My new office is exactly the opposite. I am the health conscious person bringing in fruit and nuts for my snack. But if someone is moving to a different department and there are cookie or doughnuts on their desk, I am right there to snatch one up!

  19. If that makes you the office fatty then I'm right there with ya! I need snacks every 2-3 hours. Fruit, yogurt, something. Otheriwse Bitchy Zosh makes an appearance.

  20. I too am the office fatty. Must be a retail thing. Its kind of a running joke now that any time the senior buyer comes by my desk I will probably be eating. All day....but I'm still a size four so I'll keep eating what I want :) (yes I'm THAT girl)

  21. Wow, talk about healthy! Parfait celebration, unheard of. But it is Williams Sonoma so they gotta put up a good front ;). Do what you gotta do to keep Connie at bay when the afternoon munchies hit. I'm sure the girls will thank you!

  22. hahha! I can't believe nobody brings snacks! I have a SNACK DRAWER in my desk.... oops.

  23. Ummm... keep being the office "fatty" because you sound healthier than the other girls! How can they not eat???? I'm a snacker as well. I couldn't imagine going through the day on just a teeny tiny little sandwich. And if that would lead people to think I was a pig well then fine because clearly your physique as well as mine would say otherwise.

  24. I'm no dietitian but aren't you SUPPOSE to eat every 3 ish hours? If not, I've been doing it wrong! I would have been the first to dive into that donut! Good for you on deciding to do whats best for you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. i bet one of them really wanted to eat the donut but didn't want to be the only one. and i don't understand how people don't eat. my desk is filled with snacks.

  26. Cupcakes don't taste nearly as good as thin feels. @_@

  27. I just pitty them for not enjoying their food and just relaxing about the whole thing. So silly! Eat away and make sure they see it and maybe they wont feel so much pressure to be not eating. I mean if you are eating heathy-ish and in moderation you shouldn't feel bad about it. It IS healthier, go you!

  28. omygoodness this is hilarious and I love it.

  29. Hahaha well said!! I'm like you, I need food VERY frequently. I'm the only one at work who will quite often snack in the middle of our work area (I work in the x-ray department in a hospital) in between breaks.
It's our high metabolisms girl! (At least that's what I'm telling myself.)

  31. haha omg I love this post. I love food too much to be one of those healthy gals. you would like my work! we have a fun committee which basically means they treat us to yummy food a lot. for example: on Channing Tatum's birthday we got cupcakes. and just last week they brought around a brunch cart full of fruit, muffins, scones, donut holes, orange juice and milk. The best.
