10 VERY valuable things to know about Me, V, and Thailand

Today is our very last day in Thailand {until April}. Tomorrow morning, we head to Malaysia. So I'm sitting here, fresh from an oil massage on the beach (please don't hate me), drinking a Chang beer, waiting for our pizza to arrive, and reminiscing about the past month here.

I've been thinking about it all day, playing back the last 30 days and everything we've experienced and I can't help but feel a little sad that we're leaving tomorrow. But on the other hand, I'm very grateful for the time we did have and I'm looking forward to the new adventures to come.

And, believe it or not, a month in "paradise" can still create island fever...a.k.a. I'm about ready to go.

Anyhoo, I thought it fitting to share some things I've learned on this island: Things about me, things about Verner The ThaiDizzle, and things about Thailand.

#1 - I like to sing "Eye of the Tiger" when Scooter Conquering....a.k.a. showing The Dizz how I maneuver the scooter down the steep driveway successfully.

#2 - It is inevitable. I have to pee every. single. time I get in the ocean. Every time. It never fails. Within moments of submerging in that warm water, no matter how many people are around me, boom. Pee time. And you'd better believe I don't hold back. You're welcome for that information.

#3 - If there is any, and I mean any, doubt in your mind whether a person is female or male. Always, always, assume male.

#4 - Elephants are amazing no matter what country you're in. Elephants with their babies are even more amazing to watch.

#5 - The ThaiDizzle gets the hiccups when eating spicy foods. This I never knew. But it happens without a doubt. I find this odd. He finds this normal. Then again, he's the "normal" guy that has his hand on a man's breast. So.....

#6 - Homesickness does get better. For the first month or two I kind of wondered if I'd ever get over that feeling. I was constantly missing friends and family (especially around the holidays). But since being here, a place where I was so happy and at peace with, I can tell you that feeling homesick does subside. Having your favorite person to hang out with doesn't hurt either. :)

#7 - You can {and will, in my case} get jelly fish stings without even feeling them! To which they then get red, then scabby, then turn to scars. Yay.

#8 - Red wine in Thailand is not the same as red wine in Italy. Remember this when ordering a glass and being surprised by ice cold red liquid and condensation. Actually, just don't order red wine in Thailand and you'll be fine.

#9 - It is possible to get 20+ mosquito bites throughout your month in Thailand. Some will be so itchy that it will force you to lay, extremely unattractively, in bed with ice to soothe your wounds.

#10 - Koh Samui has a penis rock and people from around the world make a point to come see it. To which they then take very inappropriate pictures with said rock.

And I shall end with this:

Dear Thailand, thank you for being oh-so special to us. I look forward to seeing you again in April. Your people are so kind and generous and made us feel at home. V Dizz and I have both agreed that every January will now be spent with you.

Stay cool.
Hug hug, kiss kiss, hug hug, big kiss, little hug, kiss kiss, little kiss.
{^^^If you know what movie that's from, I'll love you forever^^^}

xoxo

  3. This gives me chills for some reason haha. I LOVE how amazing your time spent in Thailand was (outside of the jelly fish, mosquitos, menless women, and awkward red wine)! April is going to be one fun reunion for the three of you!

  4. I'm mosquito bait, so I bet I'd get much more than that.

About the mosquitoes, you can make a paste with baking soda and water (go for a kinda slimy/creamy consistency), and if you get it on the bite within 15 minutes after getting bitten it will itch much less the whole time you have the bite (you don't have to have the baking soda on the whole time...doesn't do any extra good after 15 minutes). And, if like my kids and I you get allergic reactions to mosquito bites, it will also reduce swelling. I've had proof of this twice...I used the baking soda paste on one bite and not on another and the ones I didn't use the baking soda on swelled up much more and itched much more. The same is true for ant bites (we have nasty fire ants in Texas).

If you don't get baking soda on within 15 minutes you can crush an aspirin and mix with water and apply to the bite area and it will reduce itching too--this works for the whole time you have the bite but is only effective, well, as long as aspirin works.

  8. I'm jealous of all your adventures. You are definitely a pro on that scooter. Also, the ocean filled with water is just messing with your brain, making you think you need to pee, it's psychological, no biggie. I hope all your mosquito bites and jellyfish stings have healed.

    Happy Friday, Mish!

  9. I'm still not totally sure on why it was awesome, or why it was worth all the negatives to come back once a year.

  14. haha wow that sounds like a great month despite the jellyfish sting and mosquitos :( The elephants are too cute!! and I think anyone who says they don't pee in the ocean are LIARS!! However if I'm on my monthly I will make an effort to go find a bathroom so I don't attract sharks. Weird? I know. Haha

  17. It's really good to hear about the homesickness, that is something I genuinely worry about when traveling. I'm learning so much from your blog Mish, esp about the man vs. woman debate. haha
